Beyond Modern

Washington, DC

Since their modest beginnings as two music aficionado college students in a small Baltimore apartment, Beyond Modern has always exhibited two qualities in their music: raw passion and creativity.

Mick Marx, 23, and Sur Jazz, 25, two halves of the musical collective Beyond Modern, were solo Hip-Hop artists when the duo first decided to fuse their talents in 2009. The lyricist and aspiring audio engineer released "The Definition: EPic," their first full-length album featuring original production under the moniker Sim-PLEX in 2010. The nascent success of these two young artists was a sound that augured something bigger, something inventive. That "something" emerged as "Rebellion EP" (2011), the duo's first EP as Beyond Modern, pulling from a range of iconic influences old and new like Talib Kweli, The Neptunes, Miles Davis, DMX, Prince and Sade.

Beyond Modern is currently working on their second EP, "The Beyond Modern EP" slated for release on November 1st, 2012. The EP features an exciting bonus video to the single "Ride of Your Life," directed by DC's premiere video directing team 1st Impressions Studio whose worked with the likes of Young Jeezy, B.o.B., Wale and T.I. Often noted as a "breath of fresh air," Beyond Modern approaches their art as just that. They win over diverse audiences at carefully curated events like FADER presents vitaminwater uncapped LIVE, ARTOMATIC and BrightestYoungThings.com's New Year's Eve party with their unique and memorable sound. "We want to create a legacy like those who have inspired our music. Art is lasting. It influences. So ultimately, we want to remain artists...and make people dance," says Marx.

The result: a fresh take on hip-hop. The duo possesses the raw talent that cultivates beyond where modern music peaks to a sound that fuses genres and takes center to culture. Fervent andunrestrained — "Beyond Modern."
