Bahareh Heravi
Academic and Advisor in London
I am an academic at the Institute for People-Centred AI at the University of Surrey, and a BRAID Fellow with BBC R&D, working on Responsible AI Literacy in News.
I specialise in Data & Computational Journalism, data storytelling, and the use of AI in journalism and media. In addition to my academic activities, I regularly advise and consult the news industry on the use of AI.
I serve on the Irish Government's Open Data Governance Board and the EDI Advisory Board of the Royal Statistical Society, and act as an expert reviewer for the European Commission. I am the founding Chair of the European Data & Computational Journalism Conference and a steering committee member of the Computation + Journalism Conference.
Prior to joining the University of Surrey, I was at the School of Information & Communication Studies at University College Dublin, where I founded and led UCD Data Journalism Programme.
In my spare time, I photograph line and colour rich spaces and create experimental spirographic line art. I am learning Spanish, pero soy mala en eso. I enjoy kayaking and am just dipping my toes into stand-up paddle boarding!
