I am an Associate Professor (Reader) at the Institute for People-Centred AI at the University of Surrey, and a BRAID Fellow at BBC R&D, where I lead a strategic project on Responsible AI Literacy in Journalism.
I am also affiliated with Surrey Business School's Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, as well as the Surrey Centre for Digital Economy, and I am a Visiting Fellow at the UCD Centre for Digital Policy.
For the past 15 years, my work has focused on the intersection of AI, data, and journalism. I specialise in the application of AI in the media and journalism domain, including AI policy and strategy, AI innovation and deployment, AI Literacy, Responsible and Ethical AI, and Data Storytelling.
I am an expert reviewer for the European Commission, and serve on the Irish Government's Open Data Governance Board, and the EDI Advisory Board of the Royal Statistical Society. I am the founding Chair of the European Data & Computational Journalism Conference and a steering committee member of the Computation + Journalism Conference.
I frequently give talks on the use of AI in media and journalism, including a TEDx talk, provide expert commentaries, and sometimes appear on TV or radio.
I regularly advise news and media organisations on AI integration, policy and strategy.

In my spare time, I photograph line and colour-rich spaces and create experimental spirographic line art. I am learning Spanish, pero soy mala en eso. I enjoy kayaking and am just dipping my toes into stand-up paddleboarding!
