I am an academic at the Institute for People-Centred AI at the University of Surrey, and a BRAID Fellow with BBC R&D, working on Responsible AI Literacy in News.

I specialise in Data & Computational Journalism, data storytelling, and the use of AI in journalism and media.

I am an expert reviewer for the European Commission, and serve on the Irish Government's Open Data Governance Board and the EDI Advisory Board of the Royal Statistical Society, amongst other service. I am the founding Chair of the European Data & Computational Journalism Conferenceand a steering committee member of the Computation + Journalism Conference.

I regularly give talks on the use of AI in media and journalism, including a TEDx talk, and sometimes appear on TV or radio.

I offer consultancy services in the following areas:

AI Strategy for Journalism & Media: Strategic assessment and planning on integrating AI in news and media industry, supported by the latest research and industry practices.

AI Literacy and Training: Advise news organisations on their literacy and training programmes and/or providing tailored training programmes to build AI capabilities and understanding within newsrooms.

Responsible use of AI: Advising on the responsible deployment of AI technologies in news and media.

Mentoring: Mentoring journalists and teams on the integration of AI tools into newsroom workflows.

In my spare time, I photograph line and colour rich spaces and create experimental spirographic line art. I am learning Spanish, pero soy mala en eso. I enjoy kayaking and am just dipping my toes into stand-up paddle boarding!
