After graduating from Florida State University, with a BA in history,I returned Ocala, Florida, to join my father’s commercial roofing, sheet metal and air-conditioning business. At that time, I joined and served for six years in the 351st Military Police Company U.S. army reserve unit.
After my father passed away, I assumed the presidency of the company and remained in that position until we sold it in 1984. After the sale, my wife Terri and I owned and operated an eight-room bed and breakfast, the Fort King Inn.
In 1985, I accepted the position of Marketing Director of the Florida Roofing Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors Association (FRSA) Workers Compensation Self-Insurance Fund, we sold the inn and moved to Orlando. In 1987 I became the executive director of the association.
In 1990, I left FRSA to establish a consulting firm specializing in marketing and strategic planning. In that role, I facilitated the development of strategic and marketing plans for a new organization, The Florida Wood Council: a marketing cooperative owned by the Florida Building Material Association (FBMA). In 1992, I became the executive director of the Florida Wood Council, and In 1999, I accepted the presidency of the association and served there through 2011.
In January of 2012, I formed a consulting practice specializing in leadership training, and In June of 2012 I accepted a position as an account executive at Schaffer Associates, a premier executive search and recruiting firm. In November of 2016, I left Schaffer to start my own recruiting firm, Lumber and Building Materials Executive Recruiting (LBMER).
