I am an urban planner/ development economist, specialising in local area development and housing, with some 40 years’ experience across the world. I am currently the Senior Urban and Housing Policy Advisor to UNHabitat, now in Iraq and previously in Pakistan where I was also the HEC Professor at the National College of Arts, Lahore. I was a member of the Steering Committee of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2000-2003.

In 2005 I resigned from the Directorship of the DPU, University College London, where I had taught since 1974 - though with time out in Indonesia, the United States (Virginia Tech) and Pakistan, as well as shorter consultancies in Asia and Africa, mainly in housing (Sri Lanka, Maldives) and housing finance (Indonesia), refugee settlements (Sudan, Zaire, Somalia) and slum upgrading and local area development (India, LIFE), post-conflict (Iraq, Afghanistan)
