What is BMAC?

  • Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) is a biologic therapy derived from a patient’s own bone marrow.
  • The marrow is collected, processed, and concentrated to isolate mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), platelets, cytokines, and growth factors.
  • These components are then injected into the injured or diseased area to stimulate natural healing and tissue regeneration.

How Does It Work?

  • Stem Cells (MSCs): Can differentiate into bone, cartilage, tendon, and muscle cells.
  • Growth Factors: Such as PDGF, VEGF, and TGF-β, promote cell repair, angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), and anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Platelets: Release proteins that accelerate healing.

Key Benefits

  • Minimally invasive compared to surgery.
  • Uses the patient’s own cells, reducing risk of rejection or complications.
  • Can reduce pain and inflammation in joints and soft tissues.
  • Promotes long-term tissue repair rather than just symptom relief.

Common Applications

  • Osteoarthritis (especially knee and hip)
  • Tendon and ligament injuries (e.g., rotator cuff tears, Achilles tendon damage)
  • Cartilage defects
  • Sports injuries requiring faster recovery

Risks & Considerations

  • Mild discomfort at the bone marrow extraction site.
  • Temporary swelling or soreness after injection.
  • Effectiveness may vary depending on patient age, severity of condition, and overall health.
  • Still considered an emerging therapy, with ongoing research to refine protocols and long-term outcomes.

Recovery & Outlook

  • Most patients resume normal activities within a few days.
  • Improvements in pain and mobility are often seen within weeks, with continued benefits over months.
  • BMAC is increasingly recognized as a promising alternative to surgery for musculoskeletal conditions.
