Ethnobotany is the study of the plant-human relationship, particularly the indigenous, traditional or evolving uses of plants and fungi. The non-profit organization, Botanical Dimensions, has been doing good work in the field of ethnobotany for over 30 years. BD was founded by Kathleen Harrison & Terence McKenna. The first project was to protect a piece of Hawaiian forest and its rare South American plant collection. Since 1991, Kathleen has shepherded this small but steady non-profit through ongoing cultural and botanical projects in Mexico (Mazatec), the Amazon (supporting a major hebarium in Iquitos, Peru), California environmental work (streambank restoration, native plant propagation), and educational projects in all those places.

In 2016, we are delighted to present the unique Botanical Dimensions Ethnobotany Library, a membership library and reading room with over 1,000 books on a wide array of botanical and cultural topics. It is at our main site, in Occidental, CA.

At the library, we offer classes on a variety of ethnobotany topics. Those who sign up to be on the mailing list (on BD's website) will be informed of this year's classes, field trips and workshops.

Many students of all ages have been touched by Kathleen' stories, her knowledge of the plants, their uses, and a worldview that is rooted in ancestral and indigenous ways of perceiving.
