As a defintion, 'seeing the forest for the trees' means to discern an overall pattern from a mass of detail; to see the big picture, or the broader, more general situation... this represents what UX is and the basis of how I approach each project.

Of course, seeing the the big picture can only accomplished by diving into the details first. And then by fully understanding what someone might be interested in and how they would like to be engaged can you design and develop products that are innovative, interesting and intuitive.
