There is a crisis on this planet, its a crisis inside man, but unfortunately, the rest of life is paying the price. It does no good to blame. We have to join together who see this and build new communities to be an example of how man can live without destroying himself and the planet.
Where I live, Ireland, there is very little nature/wildlife because it has been removed and replaced by (mostly) monoculture farming over the last number of centuries. This country was beautiful native forest once top to bottom, now its all gone.
I have recently started to learn about Permaculture, which involves watching natures processes and applying it as a food forest. This is a no-till, soil-building approach that larglely mimics forest systems. It is really the raising, not of crops, but healty ecosystems and harvesting their sustainable surplus. It is a regerative process, not an extractive one. I love the idea of regenerating the being that has fed, clothed and sheltered me all of my life, the great being that is this marvellous Earth. This is a total way of living, not just a way to feed oneself. It involves learning from and harmonising with natural processes and cycles. Going to the supermarket every day to buy food means we don't live near nature. If we don't live near nature, how can we expect to understand her? We may have minimised our harm compared to others, but thats all.
I hope to be part of, as part of a permaculture community, reforestation of the land to create the kind magnificent forests (old growth) that once sustained so much animal and human life, and taught us in less obvious ways with their beauty and mystery. As or more importantly, so many of our animal friends depend on this kind of forest. They are quickly running out of it and if we want them with us in the future, we have to put their home back together.
Tony de Mello said we are living in an age of unconsciousness. Only inner awareness of whats inside us, the whole make-up of the self, "the me", can free mankind from where he is headed. I don't know what, if anything, can speed that up. For those who see a little better these things, I hope they can save enough of our world for when the rest wake up. No one is going anywhere without anyone else.
I hope we can come together as people, as friends, and all do it together from a place of love, not just let it to the last minute and do it as an act of sheer necessity, of desperation.
