A month after getting married, Army Medic - Sergeant Brian Jergens was severely injured on his first deployment in Afghanistan.
Brian was the driver of the fourth HUMVEE in a convoy when an IED blast hit his vehicle on August 7, 2011. He was thrown from his vehicle by the blast. Life-saving measures performed by his teammates prepared him for medevac to Tarin Kowt Hospital and then to the Kandahar Airfield Hospital.
He was then transported to Bagram Air Force Base. From there he was flown to Landstuhl, Germany. As a result of the blast, Brian lost both of his legs below the knee, suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, hearing loss, internal organ damage, a broken neck, damage to his right elbow and forearm, lost some fingers and teeth.
On August 14, 2011 he arrived at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, where Brian remained for a month. He was then transferred to the Palo Alto Poly Trauma Center, where he continues his rehabilitative therapies to this day, including one of his favorite activities - SWIMMING !
Brian and his wife, Jennifer were blessed with their first child, a son, in August 2013. They enjoy attending sporting events, concerts and walking their dogs. They look forward to the day when Brian can return to school and work towards his college degree.

Please help us honor this brave veteran and American Patriot who has sacrificed so much for his country and your freedom!
We want to complete the Jergens's new home with a swimming pool and yard that he can use for exercise, therapy and recreation. Brian cannot stop talking about his new swimming pool.
