Bridget White
Student in Athens, Georgia
My name is Bridget White and I have a twin sister, Katherine. We have no other siblings, so it’s always just been her and I. At home, we did everything together–not in the creepy, attached-at-the-hip kind of way you sometimes see in sets of twins–we just lived in a small town and had the same friends and interests, so it was inevitable. We always said that we wouldn’t attend college together, but when the pandemic hit and we weren’t able to tour all of our accepted schools, we somehow ended up at both going to the University of Georgia, a school that’s not very popular amongst the students at my small high school in New Jersey.
The decision came with excitement as we counted down to move-in day together, but it also came with nerves–I didn’t want to be “Katherine’s sister” anymore. With a semester down, I can confidently say that although it’s been nice to have a familiar face to count on in such an unfamiliar environment, it’s been the things like living in different dorms, taking different classes, and joining different sororities that have made my college experience so incredible and unique. It’s always a pleasant surprise when I run into Katherine around campus, each of us with our own group of friends. It’s amazing to see how far my identity has developed in just one semester away from home. I am no longer one half of the “White twins,” but my own person.
