Britta Floyd

I'm a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan. I'm pursing an undergradute degree in Urban & Regional Planning and Geotourism at Eastern Michigan University. I've always had a passion for cities and in the future I hope to work in internatinal development focusing on sustainable tourism and economic empowement, especially for women. I spent one year abroad in the United Kingdom, where I travelled to over 15 countries and won the University of Derby Student Union ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award, the first ever given to an international student.

I am an academic and cultural amassador for EMU nationally and internationally. I competed once for Ypsilanti, Michigan at the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam in Los Angeles and twice at the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational in Boston and Philadelphia representing EMU Slam.

Currently, I'm working on a poetry manuscript that will be published by Ann Arbor based RedBeard Press early spring of 2014. I have been working on many collaborations on projects related to travel and empowerment. I served as the Director of Social Justice and Political Involvement for the Minority Women in Leadership Comission, Editor of the Planning Awareness Club of Eastern (P.L.A.C.E.) Journal, and was an active member in a variety of campus organizations home and abroad. Because of my upbeat and postive image on campus I was asked to host a number of events, the largest being a fashion show with an audience with over 400 people in attendance.

I have volunteered for the Greening of Detroit, the EMU giving garden and have been a mentor to youth in my local community. I hope to continue to be an active citizen and show the world the immense capacity of an EMU Student! Outside of academia and volunteering I travel widely, read, write poetry, attend cultural events on campus and in the Metro-Detroit Area, support local Ypsilanti businesses, and enjoy people watching by riding public transportation and biking.
