What is a sauna?
A sauna is a room or cabin, usually made of wood, stone and glass, heated up to 80 -105 degrees Celsius with the help of a sauna heater. The term "sauna" has many synonyms: Finnish sauna, sweat lodge, Finnish bath... and more.
How does a sauna work?
Saunas have been cultivated by the Finns for many centuries. A sauna session usually includes a heat phase, a cool-down period and a rest phase. At first, a dry heat prevails in a sauna. The sweat bath in dry air is followed by high humidity. This is created by the evaporation of water, which is poured over hot stones. Subsequent cooling of the body usually occurs through the supply of fresh air or cold water.
During a sauna session, the body sweats profusely, which can be beneficial to health and relaxation. In addition, the alternation of dry-hot air and subsequent cooling stimulates organ systems and metabolism and strengthens defenses.
What types of saunas are there?
In Germany, the classic "Finnish sauna" (dry-hot sauna) and the "steam bath" (moist-warm sauna) are best known, but there are other types of saunas as well. The different types of saunas differ mainly in terms of temperature and humidity.
Humid saunas include, for example:
- Banja
- Biosauna/Sanarium
- Caldarium
- Hamam
- Irish steam bath
- Japanese steam bath
Dry saunas include, in addition to the classic sauna:
- Earth sauna
- tepidarium
- Saunas for babies and small children
