Bruce Ungerleider

Bruce Ungerleider, M.D., retired from the practice of medicine and surgery in 2010. Board certified in two specialties, Bruce Ungerleider, M.D., earned Diplomate status with both the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Family Medicine.

In his private ophthalmologic practice, Bruce Ungerleider, M.D., diagnosed and treated complex eye disorders. He offered a wide range of ophthalmological medical, surgical, and laser options. His areas of expertise included cataracts, glaucoma, allergies, inflammations, refractive errors, retinal and corneal problems, neurological eye conditions, and oculoplastic disorders involving the eyelids and orbits. Dr. Ungerleider's full range of surgical competence encompassed laser surgery, glaucoma and oculoplastic surgery, corneal transplantation, as well as cataract extraction with the implantation of an intraocular lens.

Bruce Ungerleider, M.D., gained peer recognition for original research in his field by notably inventing and patenting methods and apparatus for the treatment of glaucoma. His patents included designs for a patient-and-eye-surgeon-friendly method for the surgical installation and removal of various biocompatible porous intraocular devices whose purpose was to relieve excessive intraocular eye pressure in glaucoma while simultaneously delivering intraocular medications.

Bruce Ungerleider, M.D., earned his Bachelor's degree with high honors in Physics and Biology from the University of Pennsylvania. As a Marie Selby Foundation Scholar, he pursued a three-year independent study program with instruction under the noted theoretical physical chemist Jerry Donohue, Ph.D., who made important insights and contributions in the lab of Watson and Crick in Cambridge England during the seminal discovery of the structure of DNA, and Nobel Laureate John Robert Schrieffer, Ph.D., known for his seminal contribution to the mathematical description of superconductivity. Dr. Ungerleider received his Doctorate in Medicine from the Emory University School of Medicine, where he received the American Bariatric Physician Award. He continued his medical training by completing two residencies at the University of South Florida's Morsani College of Medicine in Ophthalmology and Family Medicine.
