Bryan Black
Southern California, United States
Bryan Black is a tattooer based out of Southern California. Bryan's upbringing and deep interest in various mediums of art heavily influence his tattoo style.
Bryan was born and raised in Orange County, CA. Much like any youngster growing up in sunny California, Bryan gravitated towards skateboarding and surfing. This is where Bryan refined his work ethic in pursuit of his nirvana. He recognized at a young age that nothing in life is easy and success must be earned rather than given.
When Bryan turned 18 he received his first tattoo from Tim Hendricks. Bryan was immediately enamored with the history, lifestyle, and culture that came along with tattoos. Bryan knew his calling in life and carefully took the necessary steps to start a successful career.
Bryan studied at Laguna College of Art and Design to broaden his artistic horizons. During his studies, Bryan never neglected his deep love for tattoos. Bryan immersed himself in the tattoo community through his genuine interest and made it known he was looking for an apprenticeship so he could begin his career.
After six years of repeatedly being turned down and away from local tattoo shops, Tim Hendricks, whom gave Bryan his first tattoo, welcomed and answered the many questions Bryan had about starting a career. A friendship formed between Bryan and Tim while Bryan worked at SaltWater Tattoo supply, a little family run tattoo supply, ran by tattooers for tattooers.
Any successful person must know the tools of their craft. Bryan's experience in the machine shop gave him the knowledge every tattooer seeks.
Bryan's tattoo knowledge, natural interest and work ethic make for an extraordinary tattooer. Bryan enjoys working with customers that understand that tattoos are collaborative between the artist and the client.
"To be completely honest, I don’t care much for whatever it is that I'm tattooing. It could be a bird, a rock, or a dot for all I care. They are just lines and shapes to me.
But what is important to me, is my ability to translate what my client wants to communicate through my hands: 'I like birds,' 'I like rocks,' or 'I just want a dot next to my freckle because it represents the interracial relationship my mother and father had...'
I'm in the business of translating ideas and thoughts that are legible--that's all."
