Buffie Simmons

An experienced school administrator and educator, Buffie Simmons has served the New York City Department of Education for more than a decade. She began as an educator at an urban high school, where she taught history, civics, and other related topics. Buffie Simmons conducted successful outreach efforts that raised attendance. In addition, Ms. Simmons created a new curriculum for the global history course, which supported a 17 percent increase in student success.

Buffie Simmons accepted an offer to join a middle school as assistant principal. The school was deemed a Corrective Action School, a status that Ms. Simmons addressed by developing and implementing a number of professional and curriculum development initiatives. In addition, she introduced an academic intervention plan that resulted in a school-wide increase on English Language Arts and Mathematics test scores.

Buffie Simmons served as principal of middle school, over the course of nearly a decade in the position she has implemented several successful student support interventions and developed adult professional learning communities. In 2011, she took on an additional role as community school superintendent where she assists schools in organizational and instructional endeavors.
