I'm 48 now, and started programming when I was 13. I learned more formal languages (BASIC, Pascal, COBOL) before my first internship where I learned Fortran and 8086 Assembler. I met Joe Brower around that time, and soon after, he introduced me to 4GL languages on the Mac. I did Omnis and 4th Dimension during that time, with a few nice stints for Time, Inc. and Qualcomm, and others over the next 10 years. I worked with Oracle and Sybase during those years, and touched MS SQL Server as well.
All the while, I've been a hacker in the sense that I played with tech whenever I could. A serious jack-of-all-trades.
I was a pretty competent developer, and got pretty confident, saying there was very rarely a business challenge that I couldn't develop a programming solution for. One of my 4th Dimension gigs turned into employment for Earth Products, a division of K2, Inc., the sporting goods firm. That was a 4+ year period as an IT Manager, in charge of all tech operations with two others in my team.
After that, I became more of a Project Manager. I also backed off from my profession to deal with divorce and parenting my young daughter. I did stay involved in projects of multiple types, including mobile, Drupal, Wordpress, and some custom web projects. I also finished my Business degree online, and have been trained as a Life Coach.
Nowadays, I'm doing a variety of things, and I'm expecting a boy in September. I've re-engaged with my career and am having fun managing/developing business relations of all sorts.
