At the time, I didn't quite understand why our college coach insisted that these phrases be found on EVERY golf tee that we used in tournaments. In the form of perseverance, calculated risk taking and attention to detail, these phrases have defined my personal and professional experiences.
Growing up in Pittsburgh, the team colors black and gold found their compliment in the navy blue and white colors of Washington and Lee. If I was not at golf practice or seated in an Accounting class, you might find me socializing at the fraternity house or seated at one of the round tables in the student center focusing on my next Economics assignment. An internship and four years of schooling later, I knew finance was my calling.
Upon graduation, I was off again to New York City, where I would spend the next three years in healthcare investment banking. While I thrived in the fast-paced nature of M&A deals and IPO offerings, I was determined to end up in an active investing role. Enter Point72. Each day in the stock market presented a new challenge. With every investment I made, there was a balance of risk and potential reward, just as with every shot I took as a college golfer.
In the next phase of my life, I will be taking a leadership role in my family's investment firm. In this role, I will always remember the guiding words of my college golf coach: "Mental Toughness. Course Management. Short Game."
