Growing up, I always valued the importance of having a wide variety of skills and knowledge of different topics. I would always ask adults what they did for work and have them describe in detail what their jobs were like. After a career-ending shoulder injury that halted my aspirations to play college baseball, my life goals realigned to learn a plethora of skills from working a variety of jobs that would equip me for a successful future. This next step of my life began with my first job, being a paid baseball coach for a youth travel team. I was introduced to professional practices of dealing with angry parents and having to take accountability for all of my words and actions. The kids I coached taught me that I love to teach others about things that I love, and I will always thank them for that. I brought that same passion into a math tutoring business I created in high school. My time flew by as I explained to kids the ins and outs of the same math I struggled with so much at their age. Soon after my tutoring business began, I was granted the opportunity to work on a home renovation and construction team. Through many mentors and three summers of this job, I picked up on the basics of home construction, as well as gained a great appreciation for the opportunity I am getting to go to college and choose a profession of my preference. Many of the men I worked with worked hard every day, even into their old age, to provide for their family and do whatever possible to make ends meet. I gained a lot of respect for these men and their work ethic pushes me to work harder every day. During my last summer working construction, I began also working as a golf course groundskeeper. Waking up at 5:30 AM for work every day was a hassle, to say the least, but it forced me to become a morning person and got me in a habit of starting my days off with productive activities. While learning from our golf course’s mechanics and working the course, I found a passion for mechanical systems leading me to pursue a mechanical engineering major in college. Though each job has had its positives and negatives, I do not regret working a single second of any of them. I will always be grateful for my bosses, coworkers, and customers that have helped shape me into who I am today.
