Cally Strowbridge
Since graduating with a 2:1 in Anthropology (BSc Hons) from the University of Kent (Canterbury, UK), I have taken a year to do what I've always wanted to: travel and volunteer overseas.
The cliche is true; you really do find yourself when you travel. I've realised my long-standing passions of the environment, sustainability and renewable energy are the very things I'd love to make a career of.
Outside my academic life, I have numerous interests which I love to read about, especially through StumbleUpon, my favourite site on the world wide web. These interests include fitness, vegetarianism and paleodiets, travelling, reading, and blogging. My blog count currently stands at 3, in which I write about student finance, sex education, as well as documenting my graduate gap year.
Throughout my time at university I have also been gaining exposure to the environment I would rather be based in for my career through volunteering. So far I have volunteered in a Cancer Research UK shop and as a visitors centre assistant at HMP Canterbury which has been great, and I'm always looking into more opportunities similar to this to keep me busy and to make contacts, as well as gaining insight into different industries.
I took a gap year after graduation as it's not only a great time to get myself out there and see some of the places I've always wanted to see, but through working on various projects as a volunteer I've gained a huge breadth of skills, experience and confidence which I hope will set me apart from other people after the same sorts of jobs as me!
