History of Calumet City, IL

Located nineteen miles south of the loop in downtown Chicago, Calumet City, IL borders the southeast corner of Chicago, IL. Calumet City IL is east of the Bishop Ford Freeway. At the time of it’s settlement, the town had a huge German population, a good majority of them being farmers and lutherans. Calumet City was first called West Hammond, and what actually changed the name was many residents tired of the constant drinking and gambling that was tainting their reputation.

So, West Hammond became Calumet City, but that did little to cover up their tainted history in the first place. In the 1980s, a drastic change in demographics began to happen. Many African American families, including some Mexican families, began to migrate over to the community. This had caused many of the white residents to move out.

By the mid-1980s, many low income families were moving in, which would drastically change the economic status of Calumet City, IL.

Unfortunately, so many more low-income families kept moving in, that crime rates rose exponentially. Chicago Gangs at the time would utilize the area as their own stomping grounds for a while.

However, there still shows to be improvement among the community, and as of today, the local government continues to push for a better way of life for each citizen of Calumet City, IL. Even though it is one of the more troubled suburbs on the southside, Calumet City, IL still shines bright as a town that is slowly improving with time, and many businesses and other families are moving back in.
