It has been almost three years since my first boxing debut. What a wonderful event that I had the privilege of participating in for the past three years. In the spring of the year 2020, I graduated from a school that had a total of about 220 people from kindergarten to 12th grade. It was an entirely different world when I transitioned from my tiny school to the greatest university in the nation. I would have never thought about stepping into a boxing ring if it were not for the selfless individuals I have met during my time at the University of Georgia.

I joined a fraternity my first year I came to UGA. Sigma Chi is the organization who created, “The Fight Against Suicide.” This event was created with respect to a member of the fraternity who had taken his own life. Ever since the day I joined this organization, I have been an advocate for mental health. We decided to take matters into our own hands to raise money and awareness by creating this annual fight. Anyone within our fraternity is allowed to participate in this Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission regulated fight, who must have at least a month of boxing training prior to the event. It is our fraternity members versus individual representatives of other fraternities who have the courage to step into the ring. Sure, it is cool to be able to train for a boxing event that many people will never be able to do. Although strapping on gloves and boxing in front of thousands of people is quite intimidating, knowing that I could potentially save another person’s life and being an advocate to make sure they know they are wanted in this world is all it took for me to go through with being inside the ring.
