Singh, the first born son of US immigrant parents, began his political journey at the young age of 14, when the US Armed Forces would not allow him to wear his turban in a USA
Military Academy.

Senator Paul Simon and Congressman Dennis Hastert introduced legislation on his behalf that eventually was signed in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan.
This legislation allowed Singh to graduate from the military academy with full military honors as a 2nd Lieutenant, making him the first American with a turban to graduate.
