Camp Armstrong

Come Fish and Swim and reconnect with nature in West Gardiner, ME

The Sportsmen's Club of Greater Boston, better known as, Camp Armstrong, has been a sacred summer retreat for Black families for over a century. Founded in 1916 by a group of Black Pullman porters from Boston, the Camp was created as a place for rest, recreation, and community in the wilderness of central Maine. It has since evolved into a multi-generational haven for families committed to fellowship, outdoor sports, and cultural stewardship.

Nestled on 30 acres of lakefront land on the shores of Lake Cobbosseecontee in West Gardiner, Maine, Camp Armstrong is a rustic, intergenerational retreat where members gather each summer to fish, swim, canoe, stargaze, and share stories around the campfire. The property includes two sleeping cabins (with space for up to 30 guests), a separate shower house, and a dining hall with a full kitchen and gathering space. WiFi is available, but the real magic is found offline—on the dock, in a canoe, or at the spades table.

Camp Armstrong is more than a camp. It is a living legacy of Black resilience, family tradition, and shared commitment. Many of today’s members are second, third, or even fourth generation campers, ensuring that the values of fellowship, sportsmanship, and land stewardship are passed down and renewed.

Today, the Camp is preparing for its next century—raising funds to modernize infrastructure, improve accessibility, and extend its reach to new generations. Through annual outings, work weekends, capital campaigns, and heartfelt giving, members and supporters continue to invest in the future of this timeless place.
