Richmond, United States
A Richmond-based organization, Campus California is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to protect the environment from clothing waste. Established in 2000, the organization hosts a clothing collection program throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Campus California places green drop boxes at various locations to make it easy for contributors to donate their unwanted clothing. The clothing is then resold to secondhand customers throughout the United States, Africa, and South and Central America. As a result, the business reduces the adverse affects of waste in the environment, which lessens carbon emissions involved in manufacturing and eliminating clothing.
As its core fundraising program, the clothing collection creates grant opportunities for partner nonprofit initiatives like Fighting with the Poor, an 18-month program that educates and send International Volunteers to Africa to fight poverty through sustainable community development work. Through the International Volunteers, Campus California also supports programs that build school gardens to feed children, afford young girls the opportunity to go to school, and lecture on the importance of hygiene and health.
