Capanna Coffee

One of the best ways for a consumer to reduce their environmental impact is by consuming goods produced locally. Fortunately for Iowans our state's rich soil and temperate climate means an abundance of food, both grown and raised, near our homes.

Coffee, however, presents a different problem for the local consumer. Since the regions conducive for cultivating coffee berries lie mostly south of the equator, each individual bean has many miles to travel before its transformation into our coffee. The environmental cost of this transportation is immense; unfortunately the bean's path reflects a common pattern of supply routes for many goods stretched across oceans and around the world as a result of globalization. Each step in this coffee supply chain means a less direct path for the beans to travel and consequently a greater amount of carbon emissions involved in their transportation.

By roasting our coffee in Iowa City, we take one small, yet significant step towards shrinking this path of the coffee bean from field to cup. We see our commitment to reducing the distance of the bean's journey alongside our sourcing from Fair Trade and Organic growers as our small role within a greater community striving for sustainability.
