Cara Shaye Walker

Cara Walker is a junior at the University of Alabama, majoring in journalism and minoring in digital media. She is originally from Rossville, Ga., a small town just 15 minutes from downtown Chattanooga, Tenn.

Cara stumbled upon journalism after being randomly placed in her high school journalism class during her freshman year. She fell in love with capturing the stories of her peers as yearbook editor and soon decided to pursue storytelling as a career. Graduating as valedictorian from her high school, she earned a presidential scholarship from UA and moved to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to begin her journalism studies.

Cara has remained a top student during her time in college, maintaining a 4.0 GPA and receiving the Outstanding Journalism Student award from the College of Communication for the past two years. She also received an additional scholarship from the journalism department for her achievements.

As a student, Cara has been involved with several on-campus publications. During the 2014-2015 school year, she was a staff writer and designer for Mosaic, the University of Alabama Honors College magazine, where she produced content for their website while designing four spreads for the annual edition. Cara currently writes for the UA Service-Learning magazine, which highlights courses that offer an academic as well as a community service component. She further developed her writing, copyediting and fact-checking skills during a summer internship with Alabama Heritage in 2015, and she is currently applying for internships for the 2016 summer.

Her work has been featured in Dateline Alabama, Planet Weekly and Kids Life magazine. Cara has also recently been accepted as a member of a UA editorial team traveling to Chile in May 2016. The team will then publish an online magazine called VIDA.

When she isn't writing, Cara often spends her time discovering hidden coffee shops, trying to squeeze another DIY project onto her crowded apartment walls, or sacrificing precious hours of sleep to catch up with her roommate.
