Schools take shape in response to the ideological and practical demands of the society of which they are a part. Helping children acquire core content knowledge remains a necessary objective to provide the foundation for the application, synthesis, and analysis of real world events. With regard to technology in schools, however, a critical mass of ubiquitous access will compel a paradigm shift causing disruption in existing monolithic, legacy practices. Specifically, information & communication technology tools and resources provide a gateway to shifting priorities and energies. Remaining relevant and competitive will require a change in thinking about priorities and goals. Current practices and outcomes must be adjusted to support skills that are genuinely relevant in a knowledge economy if our students are to successfully compete in a global economy.
