Carlton Hobbs

New York, NY

An internationally respected antiques dealer who opened his first shop in London at age 16, Carlton Hobbs is the proprietor of Carlton Hobbs Antiques in New York City. Mr. Hobbs is both a dealer and dedicated scholar of 17th, 18th, and 19th century British and colonial furniture as well as historically significant works of art. To that end, the firm recently created Carlton Hobbs Provenance, a website for research, provenances, and images of historically significant pieces that have passed through the Carlton Hobbs collection. For example, the gallery’s exhibition “On Tops: Table Tops from the 2nd Century to the 19th Century” features over 20 tables emphasizing extraordinary materials and techniques. For the past 28 years, Mr. Hobbs has worked with partner and Managing Director Stefanie Rinza, formerly with McKinsey & Co. in London and a graduate of the Harvard Business School. The partners attempt to reflect their sense of social awareness in the course of doing business. The partners are also keenly interested in companion animal rescue. In 2002, Mr. Hobbs acquired and began renovating the 20,000-square-foot former Virginia Graham Fair Vanderbilt mansion as a principal business address. While the building at 60 East 93rd Street is historically renovated, the roof surface, which is not visible from the street is white, designed to lower the energy consumption of cooling the building in the summer and to reduce heat reflected back into the environment.
