Mental health is a prominent issue not only in the United states but also all over the world. I recently read an article in the Daily Collegian that stated 65% of college students who dropout do so because of a mental illness. This is astounding to me. As someone who has dealt with mental illness with nearly all of my closest friends and relatives I really back the idea of erasing the stigma that comes along with mental illness. Currently people see it as something to be kept secret, a private matter. But if you got the flu you wouldn’t be ashamed of that, so why are we ashamed when we have an illness of the mental variety. I am really passionate about this because the social stigma about mental health enables the lack of help peope are getting. My friends are too embarresed to talk to a professional because then that means they aren’t normal. They don’t think they are like “those crazy people” and that prevents them from getting the help they need. Based on the growing rates of mental illness and the amount of people who suffer from them you would think it is more acceptable in culture yet I often talk to people about the matter and they do not even realize mental health was an issue at all. What I want to do is bring this issue to the attention of the public and from there take steps in improving prevention and treatment.
