National Trust - Hardwick Hall Hardwick Hall was built for Elizabeth Talbot in 1590-9. It was also named 'Bess Of Hardwick'. Robert Smythson built Hardwick, one of the earliest English representations of Italian Renaissance architecture and is considered one of the most important Elizabethan houses. This rectangular, turreted building features large grids of glass that are used to great effect. It is often referred to as Hardwick Hall, which is more window than wall. Each tower has a balustrade that incorporates an Elizabeth Shrewsbury motif. The ceilings on each storey are higher than the ones below. Hardwick is home to one of the most stunning Elizabethan interiors in England. It features plasterwork by Abraham Smith, Thomas Accres overmantels, and a classic screen by William Griffin. All dates back to the 1590s. Hardwick was given to the National Trust by the Dukes and Duchess of Devonshire in 1959. Hardwick is unique among Elizabethan homes in that it retains the original textures of its original decorations - enormous Flemish tapestries and Persian table-carpets. It also has painted wall-hangings and plaster friezes. Hardwick also contains rows of original portraits and the largest collection of needlework from the 16th and early-17th centuries. In 1601 Bess compiled a detailed inventory that identifies many of them.
