Dr. Carrie Shulman
Dr. Carrie Shulman of Portland, Oregon, is the only woman to complete her neurosurgery training at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the only female neurosurgeon in the history of the military to be trained by the U.S. Army. She received her Bachelor's degree in 1990 from Georgetown University and then graduated from the Howard University College of Medicine in 1998. Dr. Carrie Shulman completed both her internship and neurosurgery residency at Walter Reed, where she received the Meritorious Service Medal for Excellent Performance as Chief Resident.
Following the training, Dr. Carrie Shulman worked as an active duty neurosurgeon until from 2005 to 2010. During this time, she was promoted to Chief of Neurosurgery, a position in which she oversaw the training and management of personnel on all levels. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Dr. Carrie Shulman served as Neurosurgical Director for Theater, consulted for the MNC-I Surgeon for Neurosurgery for the Iraqi Theater of Operations, and educated Iraqi civilians as part of the Iraqi Physician Exchange Program.
Dr. Carrie Shulman received the Army Commendation Award for Excellent Neurosurgical Skills and Leadership and the Army Commendation Award for Exceptionally Meritorious Service as Chief Neurosurgeon in Support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Today, the board-certified neurosurgeon works at Kaiser Permanente as Director of Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery. In this role, Dr. Carrie Shulman practices endoscopic minimally invasive surgery, cerebrovascular procedures, and treatment for neurooncology.
