Sahal Carrim
Student, Volunteer, and Gamer in Johannesburg
My name is Sahal Carrim. A teacher in the making currently studying my bachelor's in education at the University of Johannesburg. My correlating majors within my degree are English and Information Communication Technologies (or ICT for short). The basis of my soon to be profession stems from my late grandfather who was a science teacher of which I took inspiration in picking my choice of trade. I was enamored with the idea of being a foundational point in a child's life in helping them forge their own future by being a scaffold for them to achieve success, not only academically but as an individual within society as well. As a means to better understand the children I will be working with in the future, I took up volunteering as part of the Link Program, which gives me the opportunity to assist foundation phase learners with their literacy skills. In choosing my aforementioned majors, one was influenced by my English teacher who created an environment conducive to work that everyone respected but also integrated an aspect of fun which kept everyone engaged and active during the lesson. Through this engagement I found my love for the subject of English as having a teacher that loved what she did, allowed me to love it too. ICT on the other hand was chosen based on my hobby of gaming, which built on my prior knowledge of different technologies as I began to identify gaming console specifications, game design and additional gaming peripherals which furthered my interest in technology as a whole. Thus, I chose ICT so that I could pursue my interests within the technological field while continuing my pursuit in education. This major/module allows me to utilize an aspect of my hobby within my pedagogical practice which can help assist my students with their learning and keep them interested. My current aim is to complete my degree and further my studies by doing my honors in ICT.
