Brian Carroll

Journalist with the Irish Daily Mail. Specialist news and feature writer, reporting on current affairs. Brian Carroll has reported on the global financial crisis with dispatches from Madrid, New York, Berlin, Greece, Iceland, Dubai, Finland and London. In August 2011, his reports from Dadaab, the world's biggest refugee camp, prompted a Daily Mail Face of Famine campaign which helped raise significant funds for four Irish charities working in the area. The Mail donated 10c of every copy sold to the campaign. Irish people contributed €12m. In the banking area, he has exposed secret financial deals between property developers and executives at both Anglo Irish Bank and Bank of Scotland Ireland. In politics, he revealed then Taoiseach Brian Cowen's secret 120% mortgage loan; how semi-state companies such as the ESB and An Post were avoiding millions in taxes through establishing 'ghost companies' in Amsterdam. In business, he has revealed widespread illegal bid-rigging by leading construction companies on State building contracts worth several billion euros. In the crime area, he has revealed how Wayne Dundon ordered two deaths from behind bars via a secret coded message smuggled out of Wheatfield Prison; and obtained exclusive CCTV footage of an on-the-run double murderer.
