Casey Liening
Casey Liening is a senior at the University of Florida in Gainesville. During her time in the College of Journalism and Communications, she has worked for WUFT-TV, a PBS station. In the past, Casey has also co-anchored the First at Five newscast. In the years prior to her television experience at UF, Casey reported for WUFT-FM, a local NPR affiliate. In the year and a half she worked for the radio station, she reported on big local and national stories such as the Presidential election in 2012 and locally, the Trayvon Martin case.
Casey’s love for television reporting did not start in college though. She has been a part of her school’s news team since the 5th grade. In the 10th grade, she won a county-wide award for a piece she produced for 9/11 as well as many other team awards over the years for “Best Overall Newscast”.
To further her experience in and her understanding of the television industry, Casey has had many television reporting internships. She started as an intern at Jacksonville’s number one station, WJXT-TV Channel 4 News for two summers. While there, she shadowed reporters but was also able to get first hand experience with writing and editing. Casey also had the privilege of interning with a local Gainesville news station, WCJB TV20 News. She was able to learn from recent UF graduates about their experiences starting out in the field and earn great experience writing stories for the web and editing VOSOTs for the newscast. Casey currently works for TV20 News as a one-man-band reporter 2 days a week while she finishes school.
When Casey’s not in the newsroom, she’s enjoying her time as a senior at UF. She may be helping out her local community by raising money for cancer research or enjoying her Gator Football-filled Saturdays. But Casey’s always keeping up with the news, since everything is so conveniently delivered straight to your phones these days!
