Charles Bertsch
I am a writer, editor and teacher currently living in Tucson, Arizona. I spent the first part of my childhood in eastern Pennsylvania, near Quakertown, then moved to the Washington D.C. area before sixth grade. After graduating from Queen Anne School in 1986, I spent a year in Germany as an exchange student, then came back to the states to attend the UC Berkeley. I received undergraduate degrees in English and German there in 1991, with highest honors, then continued on to receive my Ph.D. in English in 2000. Since coming to Arizona that year, I've taught a wide range of courses at the University of Arizona and, more recently, Arizona State University. While at UC Berkeley, I helped to found what became one of the first publications on the internet, Bad Subjects: Political Education For Everyday Life, which I continued to serve for over a decade as writer, editor and, for a few years, co-director. I contributed regularly to Punk Planet Magazine in the late 1990s and early 2000s and Phoenix New Times from 2002 to 2004. More recently, I have been the Music Editor at Tikkun Magazine, through 2007, and Zeek Magazine, where I am presently engage.d
