Carlos B Gil

I am a retired university professor who continues to study and write about all things Latin American especially Mexican politics, society, and culture, including emigration to the United States.

My newest book is We Became Mexican American: How Our Family Survived to Pursue the American Dream published by XLibris, September 2012. It received “Best Biography/Autobiography” at the Los Angeles Book Festival 2012-2013.

We Became Mexican American is a story about my old folks uprooting themselves out of the State of Jalisco, Mexico, and arriving in southern California in the 1920s. Using oral history, my book examines our assimilation into American society, we the Gil kids, and how in this way we became Americans--Mexican American.

When I was a young man I took the opportunity to serve as a Cultural Attaché for the United States Information Agency and then, many years later, became a member of the University of Washington’s History Department. Now, in my old age, I am an Emeritus Professor and continue to serve as Publisher of DiversityCentral.com, a comprehensive website addressing issues of diversity and inclusion in the American workforce. With the help of my wife, Barbara Deane, these are issues I concern myself with as well.

For the record, I earned my B.A. from Seattle University, my Master’s Degree from Georgetown University, and my doctorate from UCLA.

I was born a "Mexican" kid in San Fernando, California, I now live with my wife and family near Seattle, Washington.
