When I dare to be powerful-- to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid"
- Audre Lorde
My name is Crystal....Crys to most. I am Mama Bird and wifely - womanish, writer, performer, facilitator, logophile/bibliophile, connector, teacher, playwright and student with a penchant for obscure soul music and a deep love of Black literature and scholarship.
I love Black women: Our dialects, bodies, identities, our scent in the summer time...our survival rituals, our all around flyness and Black girl magic.
Our very existence is resistance.
I choose to dedicate my life to researching, writing, performing and otherwise normalizing the experience of women and girls of the African diaspora in America and around the world. I'm a recent graduate and budding communication and cultural scholar. I teach foundations of public speaking.
I am further developing my Master's Thesis Project, Sister Speaks: Empowering Girls Through Voice -a community education curriculum that uses interactive theater, public speaking techniques, mentor-ship and African Rites of Passage to empower middle-school aged girls in economically depressed areas. As a finalist for the National Arts Strategies Creative Community Fellowship, I need for you to send positive energy this way and keep your fingers crossed.
I'm a published poet, public speaker, a world-traveled actress (U.S. an Canada). Most recently I a playwright. I wrote, developed and performed a one woman show called "Daddy Love". It was a collection of personal narratives from fatherless daughters and absentee dads. I've been a mistress of ceremonies, workshop facilitator, idea-spinner, spokes model, news reporter, music reviewer, flight attendant and social services case manager. I'm a Jane-of-All-Trades, Master of ...some. I'm a communicator... Crys the Communicologist, if you will.
And that's enough about.me.
Peace,
- Crys Campbell
