The CertiPUR-US® foam certification program is run by a not-for-profit organization based in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The program was developed as a response to consumer concerns regarding the quality and safety of polyurethane foam used in bedding and furniture, particularly when it comes to content, impact on air quality, and overall performance and durability. All testing associated with the CertiPUR-US Program is conducted at independent, accredited testing facilities capable of performing comprehensive analyses. To ensure that products continue to meet the most stringent standards, foams must be recertified after six months, then annually thereafter, and CertiPUR-US performs random compliance verification checks.

CertiPUR-US-certified foams are made without formaldehyde, heavy metals like mercury or lead, PBDEs,TDCP or TCEP ("Tris") and certain other flame retardants, or any phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Foam must also be made without the use of ozone depleters and are low VOC emissions (less than 0.5 parts per million) for indoor air quality.
