Chad Brown

Amherst, Massachusetts, United States

I was raised in a rural town in Northeast Pennsylvania. I have a family of six with two brothers and a sister, me being the oldest. Being the eldest child in a family throws you in a position of leadership without asking for it. You have to set the example and pave the way for your siblings to follow. I believe I have set a high bar for my siblings and encourage them to raise it.

I have continued to improve and exercise my leadership qualities through high school and college. I had my first taste of real leadership as the captain of my lacrosse team. Under my leadership, we won our first district championship. Currently, I am a finance major at the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst, but where I have enhanced my leadership skills is through the co-curricular activities I have been a part of. The most beneficial has been through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corp. In AFROTC you are thrown into leadership positions and learn to improve through your mistakes. I have been a flight commander, where I have had to lead 15 members in a variety of exercises and drills that involved making quick decisions, critical thinking and group communication. The leadership skills I honed in on have allowed me to influence and make great strides for other co-curriculars I have been in.

Not only have I had leadership positions within ROTC but within my fraternity as well. Being part of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity I have been able to practice these leadership skills in the multiple positions I held. The two most influential positions I held were Vice President and Recruitment Chairman. Being Vice President I had the ability to control multiple positions that were under me including: community service, public relations, and alumni relations. Leading these positions allowed me to create new and innovative ideas that boosted the fraternity as a whole. An example would be for community service. Under my supervision we had one of the most successful food drives in the fraternities history, donating over 2,500 cans to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. As the recruitment chair, I created and organized new ways to recruit that has led the fraternity to reaching a 100-man chapter, which is a first for our fraternity chapter.I am passionate about leadership because it creates opportunities to be passionate about everything I lead. I hope to apply my leadership traits in a future relating to corporate finance.
