I am an Associate Professor of Education at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. My scholarly work revolves around three diverse topics: social studies education, using popular media as pedagogy, and Prisoners of War in Iowa between 1943 and 1946. My work has been published in the Annals of Iowa, the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, and in both the Wiley-Blackwell Pop Culture and Philosophy Series and the Open Court Pop Culture and Philosophy Series (links to the books are below).

I have a new book out on teaching history through popular media. It contains 9 chapters, 3 each devoted to teaching history through music, graphic novels, and movies. You can learn more at www.makinghistorypop.com

As an education professor at Simpson, I rely on my 15 years of teaching grades 6-12 to help my students leave Simpson ready to begin work immediately as effective classroom teachers.

As a Humanities Iowa Speakers Bureau Representative, I travel around the state of Iowa sharing my knowledge of the role Axis prisoners of war played in helping Iowa farmers during the Second World War. What is especially important is that a camp in Clarinda, Iowa, was one of only two camps in the nation that housed Japanese Prisoners of War.

I have four wonderful children and an amazing wife of more than 30 years.
