I’m Chanda Luherm Kunda, a passionate Mechatronic Engineer and Computer Scientist dedicated to solving the global energy crisis through innovative and sustainable technologies. Currently, I’m pursuing dual Bachelor’s degrees—Mechatronic Engineering at Copperbelt University and Computer Science at the University of the People. This combination allows me to approach complex challenges from both hardware and software perspectives, blending mechanical systems, electronics, and computing to develop integrated solutions that address real-world problems.

From the start of my academic journey, I have been driven by the belief that technology holds the key to a more sustainable future. This vision has shaped my studies and motivated me to seek projects that make a tangible difference, especially in renewable energy and smart systems. I am deeply committed to creating technologies that reduce environmental impact, improve energy accessibility, and empower communities.

One of my most significant projects was leading a community-driven renewable energy initiative in Halifax Central (HX1). We designed and proposed a dual-technology system combining air-source heat pumps and solar panel installations for new housing developments. This project aimed to provide a clean, affordable alternative to traditional electricity and gas. By reducing energy bills by up to 73%, it offers substantial relief to low-income households while cutting carbon emissions drastically. Working on this initiative taught me the importance of community involvement, economic feasibility, and technical innovation in creating sustainable energy solutions that work on the ground.

In addition to energy projects, I have applied my engineering and software skills in diverse areas. For instance, I developed an Arduino-based smart traffic light control system that enhances pedestrian safety by incorporating a flashing pedestrian light as a warning before the signal changes. This project strengthened my expertise in embedded systems programming, real-time control, and user-focused design. It also showed me how technology can make everyday urban environments safer and more efficient.

My software experience includes creating a MATLAB-based graphical user interface (GUI) application to analyze and visualize engineering data. This tool calculates statistical metrics like maximum, minimum, mean, and standard deviation without using built-in functions, demonstrating my strong grasp of programming fundamentals and numerical methods. It reflects my commitment to mastering both theoretical and practical aspects of engineering and computing.

I also have a solid foundation in materials science, which is essential for designing durable, high-performance components. My studies cover crystal structures, phase transformations, and material imperfections, knowledge I integrate into my engineering projects to ensure reliability and efficiency.

Financial and feasibility analysis is another area where I bring value. I have experience preparing detailed projections and cost analyses for renewable energy installations, helping ensure projects are economically viable in addition to being technically sound. This holistic approach is crucial for sustainable technology deployment in real-world settings.

Looking ahead, my goal is to become a leading innovator in sustainable energy technologies. I am particularly interested in advancing smart grid systems, integrating renewable energy sources with Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), and developing next-generation energy storage solutions. I aim to design scalable, cost-effective, and accessible systems that transform how communities generate and use energy.

I see my dual expertise in engineering and computer science as a unique advantage—allowing me to develop comprehensive solutions that address both hardware challenges and software opportunities. Whether building embedded control systems, optimizing algorithms, or architecting energy management platforms, I thrive at the intersection of disciplines.

Beyond technical skills, I am committed to leadership and collaboration. I actively mentor peers, organize study groups, and engage in knowledge sharing to foster innovation and collective growth. I believe that building strong communities and networks is vital for creating lasting impact.

I am continually seeking new opportunities to apply my skills through internships, research, and community projects. With curiosity and determination, I adapt to emerging technologies and challenges. I’m excited about the future of engineering and computing and remain dedicated to contributing meaningfully to a cleaner, smarter, and more equitable world.

If you want to connect, collaborate, or learn more about my work, I welcome the opportunity to engage with fellow innovators, researchers, and changemakers. Together, we can push the boundaries of technology and build solutions that truly make a difference.
