Chanele Perry

Hempstead, New York, United States

My writing composition teacher always tells us to avoid using our inner fourty year old when we write papers. We're to allow our voices to shine and trust that we have the ability to coherently get our ideas across without sounding old and stuffy.

My voice is not fourty years old. My voice is that of a current college student wading in a shallow pool of indecision surrounded by guppies who seem to have it all figured out. My voice may sound small because it hasn't seen as much of the world as the guppies, but my voice has a lot of ideas. Big ideas. New ideas. My voice has lead an Improv Team and joined in the National Honor Society. My voice doesn't shake when it's nervous, but it does take a second to think of what it should say. My voice is confident.

My voice won't lie to you and tell you that it's perfect. My voice isn't perfect. But my voice will give you promises of dedication and hard work. My voice keeps its promises. Some people have microphones for their voice, so it can be heard. My voice has to fight through trees, karate chop an old lady, battle the Terminator, and fill out a ballot just to be seen. But my voice will go through all that trouble. My voice will duke it out with the best of them, sometimes fueled only by pure stubornness, and won't quit until it gets heard.

Because I am Chanele Perry and my voice deserves to be heard.
