Chapter 20

Motifs:

The motif relating to only having one eye is found in chapter 20. In the orphanage, Amir and Farid realize that the man who runs the cruel place has one of the lenses in his glasses chipped.

Plot Points:

  1. Amir arrives in Kabul and sees that it is very poor and there are many signs of war
  2. While in Kabul, he finds a beggar who told him he knew his mother
  3. Farid and Amir learn that children are being sold in an orphanage.
  4. While looking for Sorhab, the two boys learn he was one of the children that were sold
  5. Amir is given an 'order' to find the man who knows where Sorhab is staying

Significant quote:

"A short, thin, balding man with a shaggy gray beard opened the door. He wore a ragged tweed jacket, a skullcap, and a pair of eyeglasses with one chipped lens resting on the tip of his nose. Behind the glasses, tiny eyes like black peas flitted from me to Farid" (251).
