The artist known as Chayim Shvarzblat was born in Lakewood, New Jersey, in a working family on December 14, 1954.

Although during its first ten years, painting was only the passionate hobby of a young dreamer and romantic, he ended up being one of the best watercolor painters. Shvarzblat has shown interest in painting since young age. So, his parents decided to enroll him at the New York School of Art.

In 1978 Chayim moved to Paris and enrolled Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Painting.

Shvarzblat was awarded a Harkness Fellowship in 1980, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1982.

In 1983, he moved to London and became a teacher at the Oxford University of London. Three years later, he left the university in order to move to Sicily. There he created his best on location watercolor paintings. In 1988, he moved to the south of France to continue exploring new locations for painting.

The young painter represented the USA at the 1992 Venice Biennale.

Chayim Shvarzblat’s aquarelles have been presented on many exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in NY. The painter has had a number of solo exhibitions at The Phillips Collection in DC, The Hayward Gallery in London, The Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and many others.

In 2010, Shvarzblat moved in New York. There he became an art teacher at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, where he teaches atmospheric watercolor. Moreover, he exposed several works and published theories about his style of painting.

Shvarzblat spends most of his time at his ‘Chayim’s atelier’ in Manhattan, where he creates his aquarelles.
