Chelsea Brown
Rock Hill, SC
Not afraid to take chances, senior mass communication major Chelsea Brown is eager to achieve her dream of becoming a radio/television personality.
The daughter of a military soldier, she learned quickly to value education and to use it to create opportunities.
And Brown is quick to respond when an opportunity presents itself. She applied for and was awarded one of only 13 Washington Media Scholars Foundation Media Fellows Scholarships given this summer to college students.
Her scholarship essay told how the grant would help her family pay for her and her sibling’s college education as they handled deployment and constant moves. Her family has lived in Germany, Kansas, Texas, New York, South Carolina and Washington.
Brown used her connections to put her interest in celebrity entertainment to work - spending the summer as an intern with MTV in New York City. During the summer internship, she worked on copy for the show “True Life” and “The Challenge,” put together questions and quizzes for the MTV app for “Catfish” and “The Challenge,” and handled social media for “Girl Code” and Facebook legacy pages for older MTV programs such as “Beavis and Butthead.”
Another assignment won her an award for the Viacom/MTV Networks Video Music Awards Intern Army Competition. The five-week competition pitted Viacom interns from New York City against those in Los Angeles. Each intern was assigned a promotion mission for the MTV Video Music Awards and had to use his or her creativity to promote an aspect of the awards show.
Brown was directed to advertise Lady Gaga's performance for the VMA's as well as her newest album. She posted a picture of babies on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook with the caption: "Are you ready to go Goo Goo for GaGa?" Her concept earned her the Mission #2 award in the VMA's 2013 Intern Army Contest.
Brown’s Winthrop experience has been marked by a determination to sharpen her skills. Chosen this fall as one of the main anchors for Winthrop's newscast, "Winthrop Close Up," Brown has gained experience handling the desk as well as working the teleprompter and camera.
She also is a member of the Winthrop Association of Black Journalists and Xi Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and is a peer mentor, vice president of the DiGiorgio Student Union and co-host of “Battle Of the Sexes,” a radio show on Winthrop radio station, WINR.
