The John Rylands University Library (JRUL) has world-renowned research collections, which include significant numbers of early printed books, archives and manuscripts in a wide range of formats. Photographing these collections requires sensitive handling and skilful capture techniques. The JRUL is working towards best practice in object-centred digitisation. We put the care and preservation of the object at the heart of the digitisation process, rather than extracting the content by the quickest means. Through a series of pre- and post-digitisation steps, we believe we can achieve high quality images and preserve our collections into perpetuity. This approach has been developed in collaboration between our Imaging and Collection Care Departments.
