I am the co-host and a producer/writer of the NPR podcast, White Lies, which was the 2024 recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award for best podcast and a 2020 Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Audio Reporting. A longtime food writer for publications such as the San Francisco Examiner, Slate, Gourmet, Gastronomica and the Oxford American, I wrote The Perfect Fruit: Good Breeding, Bad Seeds and the Hunt for the Elusive Pluot (Bloomsbury), and co-founded a food and cooking website called Cookthink. A founder of a creative writing program for students called the Desert Island Supply Co., I work as a senior lecturer in journalism at the University of Alabama.
