Chris Brophy

Type in ‘Chris Brophy’ in to Google and you’ll realise that there are quite a few of them. They’re all over the place. One’s a boxer, another a lawyer, university lecturer and even a golfer. This Chris Brophy however, isn’t any of them, but he has done a lot. This one was born in Salford, United Kingdom in 1974 and works in the media. But who is he really, what has he done over the years? … A former record producer, remixer, radio broadcaster, teacher, web designer, comedian and father of three overly-chatty kids! Here’s the story so far: Chris Brophy, is an award-winning entrepreneur who has achieved significant success in the music and media industries worldwide. From an early age, Chris developed a fascination with performing, and in the early 80s took his first step in to the world of music by taking piano lessons and going on to perform at the Royal Northern College of Music. After winning Young Musician of the Year in 1985, Chris left high school and went on to study at Manchester’s famous School of Sound Recording / Spirit Studios alongside members of 808 State, Simply Red, Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. Whilst at the SSR, Chris further developed his songwriting and sound recording skills by setting up a studio where he recorded and released his own self-funded vinyl E.P in 1993. Six months later, he signed a deal to produce music for fitness classes around the UK with top local bands. In 1994, Chris was signed as a remixer to work at Gorse Road Studios in London, remixing a track released on Sony BMG. In 1994, he took a step in to the world of radio, by working as a voice over artist on commercials at Manchester’s dance station Kiss 102/Galaxy 102, a role that soon led to him co-presenting and producing the ‘Up All Night’ show. Like many who work in the radio industry, Chris has also worked on hospital radio for an international charity, where he held the position of Press & Press Officer. He has hosted shows on 78 radio stations globally, in fact, at its peak, his Infect’ive Mix show aired to 2.2 million listeners a month and was broadcast on AM, FM, DAB, Internet and satellite stations across every single continent. The show was a huge success. It was broadcast for a number of years, received praise from fans all over the world and rewarded Chris with a Web Radio Award for Best Syndicated Radio Show, amongst many others. Over ten years later and Chris is celebrating having achieved significant success as a remixer and record producer across America. During this period, he worked on over 65 records for 30 labels internationally, selling over half a million records. His music appeared on over 114 charts across America, including 11 number one’s and 39 top ten hits. At the studio hear ran near San Francisco, California; Chris worked on a number of records, one of which was a George Michael cover which appeared on the Grammy Awards Nomination Ballot. A number one hit record on America’s Billboard Chart pushed Chris above top artists such as Sting, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and even Elvis. The same song was also number one for an astonishing eleven months on a New York dance chart. His experiences as a remixer and producer in America have enabled him to work at 22 of the best studios around the world from Manchester to Miami and London to Los Angeles. In 2003, Chris appeared regularly on the Channel 4 breakfast TV show RI:SE, live from London and had also featured in music videos filmed in LA. Three years later, having hosted live radio shows in Hollywood, California, Chris worked as a music industry consultant, where he delivered the New Deal for Musicians Programme across the UK. He took the painstaking decision to quit working in the music business late in 2006 when his daughter tragically died, but bounced back in 2007 when he landed a job at Salford City Radio (‘SCR’); a station he actually co-founded six years earlier. He held the role of Studio Manager until being promoted to Station Manager in 2010. The role involved broadcasting 168 hours of audio a week from 4 studios, managing 150 volunteers, hosting fundraising events and carrying out all financial and promotional duties. During his time as an award-winning radio manager, producer and broadcaster, Chris has interviewed some of the biggest names in music and showbiz, and you can hear them over on our radio page. Thanks to Chris, Salford has it’s own quadruple award-winning full-time community radio service, reaching over 100,000 listeners a month. Whilst at the station, he also had his own weekly column in local paper ‘The Salford Advertiser’. In 2008, Chris founded non-profit group Music Industry Learning Ltd, the world’s first online music industry academy, which gained him a Salford Business Award nomination just four months after launch. This led to writing six books about the music business on a variety of topics from songwriting, composing and copyright to performing, distribution, publicity and how to get a record deal. His work with
