Christian Berger is a historian of modern and contemporary art with specializations on Western Conceptualism of the 1960s and ’70s as well as on 19th-century French art, working as a full-time research fellow and lecturer at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. He was a fellow at the German Center for Art History (Centre Allemand d’Histoire de l’Art) in Paris and a research fellow and lecturer at Philipps University Marburg.He has published articles in journals as Zeitschrift für Ästhetik und allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft, and essays in several conference volumes and exhibition catalogues. His book "Wiederholung und Experiment bei Edgar Degas" ("Repetition and Experiment in the Art of Edgar Degas") came out in 2014 at Reimer Verlag, Berlin and is based on his PhD thesis submitted to Berlin Free University in 2013. In 2015/16, he will be the Volkswagen Foundation fellow at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles with a project titled "The Materials of Conceptual Art," that addresses questions of materiality as well as referentiality in Western Conceptualism from the late 1960s to the early 1970s.
