Hi there! I am a PhD student from the relatively tiny island of Malta, situated in the middle of the Mediterranean sea.
I have several interests and hobbies, including gaming, cars, movie watching and technology.
I am currently studying at the Faculty of Information & Communication Technology, at the University of Malta. I am also a Teaching Assistant and Technical Demonstrator of several study units at this University, all related to the area of Signal Processing - my specialisation.
Given my specialisation in Signal Processing, I am very interested in its applications - particularly computer vision, image processing, video processing. Given my interest in cars, I am also interested in autonomous vehicles, although I haven't worked much in this area - yet.
My PhD research focuses on the automated matching of mug-shot photos maintained by law enforcement agencies with face sketches obtained from eyewitness descriptions of criminals. Due to the difference in appearance of sketches and photos - caused not only by the different type of picture, but also by deformations due to memory loss and exaggerations in describing certain distinctive facial features - even manual matching of sketches with photos can be challenging. However, the current process of disseminating the sketch to the media in the hope that someone recognising the person in the sketch is time-consuming, not guaranteed to be successful and does not exploit all available resources - primarily the mug-shot databases maintained by law enforcement. Hence, a system that can automatically match sketches with photos can increase conviction rates and reduce the time required to identify suspects.
I invite you to visit my website, where you will be able to find several resources and links to my work and other profiles - thanks for reading! :)
